Abstract
Background : Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by high blood glucose (or blood sugar) levels, which over time can cause serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. In the past three decades, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes has increased rapidly in countries of all income levels. Type 1 diabetes, previously known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a long-term condition in which the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or becomes resistant to insulin. Access to affordable medications, including insulin, is essential for people with diabetes to survive. All countries have agreed to halt the increase in diabetes and obesity by 2025. In recent decades, the number of cases and prevalence of diabetes have increased. Around 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, most of them living in low- and middle-income countries, and diabetes causes 1.5 million deaths each year. (WHO, 2023).
